Definition
What Is a Reference Check?
A reference check is a structured conversation with people who have worked closely with a candidate, usually former managers, to confirm the working relationship and learn how the candidate actually performed: their strengths, reliability, teamwork, conduct and whether the referee would hire them again.
An employment history check confirms facts such as job title and dates with HR. A reference check adds the judgement of the people who saw the candidate work every day.

Who we speak to
The Right Referees for a Reliable Reference
The closer a referee worked with the candidate, the more their answers are worth. We confirm the relationship before we ask a single question.

Colleague
Worked side by side and can speak to teamwork
Candidate
Client or partner
Useful for sales, account and consulting roles
Team member
Shows how a manager actually leads people
We do not accept friends, relatives or referees who never worked with the candidate.
Why it matters
Why Reference Checks Matter in Bangladesh
Interviews show how a candidate talks about their work. References show how they actually worked. The catch is that the candidate chooses the referees and supplies the phone numbers, so a friend can pose as a former manager. Reaching referees through their company, not the CV, is what makes a reference worth having.
Red flags we look for
- 1A referee who cannot be reached through the company
- 2Job titles or dates that do not overlap with the candidate's
- 3Vague, rehearsed praise with no concrete examples

Reference Checks in Bangladesh: FAQs
What is a reference check?
A reference check is a structured conversation with people who have worked closely with a candidate, usually former managers, to confirm the working relationship and learn how the candidate performed, including their strengths, reliability, conduct and whether the referee would rehire them.
How much does a reference check cost in Bangladesh?
BPO Bangladesh charges a flat USD $39 per reference check. Each referee we interview counts as one reference check, so two referees for one candidate cost USD $78.
What is the difference between a reference check and employment verification?
Employment verification confirms facts, such as job title and dates, with the employer’s HR team. A reference check asks people who worked with the candidate for their judgement of the candidate’s performance and behaviour. Many employers order both.
Who should a candidate give as a referee?
The best referee is a former direct manager. Peers, clients and, for managers, people who reported to the candidate are also useful. We do not accept friends, relatives or anyone who never worked with the candidate.
What questions do you ask referees?
We confirm the relationship and dates, then ask the same core questions about responsibilities, strengths, areas for development, reliability, teamwork, conduct, reason for leaving and eligibility for rehire, plus two questions tailored to the role you are filling.
How do you spot a fake referee?
We reach referees through their company’s switchboard, official email or other independent sources rather than only the number on the CV, and check that their role and dates overlapped with the candidate’s. A referee we cannot place at the company is flagged in the report.
Do you need the candidate's consent?
Yes. We ask for the candidate’s signed consent before we contact any referee. It reassures referees that they may speak openly and supports compliance with Bangladesh’s data protection law.
Do you interview referees in Bangla or English?
Both. We speak to each referee in the language they are most comfortable with and write the report in English, so foreign employers can read it directly.
