Definition

What Is a Factory Capability Audit?

A factory capability audit is an on-site technical assessment of whether a manufacturer has the capacity, equipment, skills and quality systems to produce a specific product to the buyer’s standard and schedule.

It is also called a technical audit or manufacturing audit. It is different from a social audit, which checks how workers are treated, and from a pre-shipment inspection, which checks finished goods.

1
Can they make it?Right machines, skills and processes for your product and its construction.
2
How much, how fast?Real capacity per day and per month, measured against current orders.
3
Will it be right every time?A working quality system, from incoming materials to final packing.

Scoring

Seven Areas Every Capability Audit Scores

Each area is scored from 1 to 5 against clear evidence, so you can compare factories on the same scale.

AreaWhat we checkWhat a 5 looks likeExample score

Production capacity

Lines, machines and shifts measured against current orders.

Spare capacity for your order without overtime or subcontracting.

Machinery and maintenance

Machine types, age, condition and maintenance records.

The right specialised machines, with a written maintenance plan.

Quality management system

Inline and end-line checks, AQL sampling and defect tracking.

Documented QC at each stage, with data used to cut defects.

Sampling and development

Pattern making, sample room speed and first-time approval.

Samples approved on the first or second round.

Workforce skills

Operator skill matrix, training and supervisor experience.

Multi-skilled operators and a training record for each line.

Materials and testing

Fabric and trim sourcing, inspection, storage and lab testing.

Incoming materials inspected and tested before cutting.

Planning and delivery

Production planning, order tracking and on-time delivery history.

A live production plan and a proven on-time record.

Example scores for illustration. Your report scores each area from evidence found on site.

Capacity check

Quick Production Capacity Calculator

Test a factory’s capacity claim before the audit. This uses the standard garment-industry formula: output = available minutes × line efficiency ÷ SAM.

Estimated output per day0 pcs
Per month0 pcs

An estimate only. The audit checks the real numbers: machines that run, absenteeism, line balance and how much capacity current orders already use.

A factory capability audit is an on-site technical assessment of whether a manufacturer has the capacity, equipment, skills and quality systems to produce a specific product to the buyer’s standard and schedule.

A capability audit checks whether the factory can make your product well and on time. A social audit checks how workers are treated. Many buyers need both. See social compliance audit readiness.

Output in pieces equals available machine hours times 60, divided by the product SAM, multiplied by line efficiency. We check each input on site, including how many machines actually run.

SAM, or standard allowed minutes, is the time a trained operator needs to make one piece at a normal pace, including allowances. It is used to plan capacity and price labour.

Yes. We review incoming material checks, inline and end-line inspection, AQL sampling, defect records, the QC lab and how quality data is used to fix problems.

Usually one day on site for a mid-sized factory, plus preparation and report writing. Large or multi-unit factories take longer.

Yes. We visit factories in industrial areas such as Gazipur, Savar, Narayanganj and Chattogram. Travel costs are confirmed in the quote.

The report lists the gaps and the actions needed. You can approve with conditions, ask for a re-audit after fixes, or choose another supplier. For wider checks see supplier due diligence.
